Portfolio Rebalancing with Bitcoin, Gold and Stocks: What 20 Percent Crypto Did

Open the tool ↗

Most people do not hold one asset. The Portfolio Mix tool takes up to eight assets with weights, an amount and a rebalancing rule (never, monthly or yearly), and reports the end value, CAGR, volatility, worst drop and what each holding contributed.

A worked example since January 2021

$10,000 becomesCAGRVolatilityWorst drop
20% Bitcoin, 60% S&P 500, 20% gold, rebalanced yearly$26,41218.4%19%-35%
The same mix, never rebalanced$22,331n/an/a-37%
100% Bitcoin$26,76018.7%57%-77%

In this window the diversified mix ended within about 1% of all-Bitcoin while taking roughly a third of the volatility and less than half the worst drop. Bitcoin contributed 33.5 percentage points of the mix's 164% return from a 20% weight, while the S&P 500 contributed 66.8. Yearly rebalancing beat never rebalancing by about $4,000 because Bitcoin's weight drifted up and rebalancing sold some of it before drawdowns.

Read it carefully

  • This is one window. The 2021 start sits just after a big Bitcoin run, so a different start date changes the picture; try several.
  • Rebalancing helps when assets mean-revert and hurts when one asset trends for years. It is a risk-control choice, not a free return source.
  • The numbers are price only, with no dividends, fees, tax or spreads.

Pair it with the Correlation Matrix to see why the mix behaved as it did. API: /api/lab/portfolio?mix=bitcoin:20,sp500:60,gold:20&rebalance=yearly&amount=10000&from=2021-01-01.

Pricing and limits

Hindsight runs cost $0.002 in account credits, or come from the monthly plan allowance. A few free anonymous samples are offered each day, and a result someone has already computed is free to view for ten minutes. Spend caps apply to every account.

Numbers come from the BitBank Hindsight Lab on daily closes (Yahoo Finance), retrieved 8 October 2026. They are history, not a forecast, and price only: no dividends, fees or tax.
