Miss the Best Days in Crypto: The Cost of Sitting Out
2026-10-08
The classic market-timing warning says a few big days produce most of the return, so sitting out is expensive. The Miss the Best Days tool measures it for any Time Machine asset and also shows the mirror case: what if you had dodged the worst days.
Bitcoin since 2021
$1,000 in Bitcoin on 1 January 2021 was worth about $2,913 on 6 October 2026 across 2,104 daily moves. Remove the best 5 days and it is about $1,519. Remove the best 10 and you are at $905, below where you started. Remove the best 30 and $1,000 becomes about $149.
| Scenario | Value | Return |
|---|---|---|
| Hold throughout | $2,913 | +191% |
| Miss 5 best days | $1,519 | +52% |
| Miss 10 best days | $905 | -9% |
| Miss 20 best days | $350 | -65% |
| Dodge 5 worst days | $6,306 | +531% |
| Miss 5 best and 5 worst | $3,289 | +229% |
The part the warning leaves out
The best days are not randomly scattered. In this window, 6 of the 10 best days fell within 30 days of one of the 10 worst days. Volatility clusters: violent rallies follow violent crashes. An investor who panics out after a crash tends to miss the rebound, while one with a perfect crystal ball would do far better by dodging losses. That is why the tool shows both sides. Missing the best 5 and the worst 5 together leaves you ahead of holding, but nobody can identify those days in advance.
Method and limits
Daily returns are close to close. The tool ranks every day, removes the top or bottom N, and compounds what remains. Results use history only and assume the same return would have been available on the other days. It does not model fees or tax, and crypto trades every day, so there are more daily observations than in a stock index.

Pricing and limits
Runs are metered. Hindsight tools cost $0.002 a run, Token Lab holder tools $0.01, and Social Pulse or the AI analyst $0.05, taken from account credits. Paid plans include a monthly allowance and then fall back to credits. Anonymous visitors get a few free hindsight samples a day, and any result someone has already computed is free to view for a few minutes. Daily and monthly spend caps apply to every account.
Numbers come from the BitBank Hindsight Lab run on daily closes (Yahoo Finance) on 8 October 2026. They shift as the series updates and are history, not a forecast.
