Bitcoin vs Nasdaq-100: Why Correlation Rises—and Why It Changes

The short answer: Bitcoin and the Nasdaq-100 often become more correlated when a common macro shock dominates both markets. Changes in interest rates, real yields, dollar liquidity, volatility, and investor risk appetite can prompt the same marginal investors to buy or sell both exposures. Correlation can then fall—or reverse—when company earnings or crypto-specific events matter more.

That makes correlation a regime statistic, not an identity and not a forecast. Bitcoin is not a technology stock: it has no corporate cash flow, trades continuously, and carries distinct custody, policy, leverage, and network risks. The Nasdaq-100 is a changing portfolio of large non-financial companies. Similar price movement in one period does not make their economic foundations interchangeable.

What is actually being compared?

The Nasdaq-100 is not the entire Nasdaq Composite and it is not simply “100 tech stocks.” Nasdaq describes it as an index of 100 of the largest domestic and international non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market. It uses modified market-capitalization weighting and is currently growth- and technology-heavy, while also including companies from retail, healthcare, telecommunications, biotechnology, and other industries.

Bitcoin is a digitally native bearer asset transferred on a public settlement network. It gives its holder no legal claim on company profits or dividends. Its price reflects demand for its scarcity, portability, settlement properties, and network—as well as liquidity, leverage, regulation, custody conditions, and changing market narratives.

A rigorous study must also identify the series. NDX is a price index, while a total-return index incorporates distributions. QQQ is an investable fund with fees and tracking effects. Researchers should compare Bitcoin returns with the selected Nasdaq-100 return series, not silently substitute the Nasdaq Composite or correlate two rising price levels.

When Bitcoin–Nasdaq correlation tends to rise

A shared macro shock dominates

Higher real yields can reduce the present value investors assign to distant corporate cash flows, which often matters strongly for growth shares. Bitcoin has no cash flows to discount, but tighter financial conditions can still reduce speculative balance-sheet capacity and willingness to hold volatile assets. When the same rates or risk-appetite shock dominates both markets, returns can move in the same direction.

The marginal investor base overlaps

An IMF working paper found that greater crypto–equity co-movement since 2020 coincided with increased institutional participation in crypto. Its estimated common “crypto factor” was especially correlated with global technology and small-cap equity factors in that period. This does not prove institutions caused every correlated move, but it offers a plausible channel: investors active in both markets may respond to common risk limits, volatility targets, and funding conditions.

Stress forces positions to be reduced together

During a volatility shock, correlations across risky assets can rise as leverage is cut, collateral is sold, and portfolios move toward cash. IMF research found crypto–equity return and volatility spillovers increased after the pandemic and tended to strengthen in episodes of financial-market volatility. A relationship that looks diversifying in calm markets may therefore behave differently under pressure.

Why rates and liquidity matter—but are not magic signals

“Liquidity” has at least three meanings. Market liquidity is the ability to trade without moving price materially. Funding liquidity is the ability to borrow or finance positions. Macro or dollar liquidity describes broader financial conditions affecting credit creation, leverage, and risk appetite. Treating all three as one variable creates false precision.

For Nasdaq-100 companies, rates influence discount rates, financing costs, demand, and valuation multiples. For Bitcoin, IMF research reports that contractionary US monetary-policy surprises reduce a common crypto price factor primarily through a risk-taking channel. The mechanism is therefore not identical, even when the price response is similar.

A central-bank balance sheet or money-supply chart alone is not a dependable Bitcoin clock. Earnings surprises, fiscal policy, the dollar, credit spreads, investor positioning, crypto leverage, and asset-specific news can overwhelm a single macro indicator. “Easier liquidity is supportive” is a scenario hypothesis to test, not a deterministic law.

Correlation is regime-dependent

Correlation depends on the selected dates, return frequency, and window. Thirty daily observations can give a very different answer from 36 monthly observations. A full-history coefficient can also hide several distinct states: near-zero co-movement, a macro-led positive regime, and brief decoupling around crypto or earnings events.

Peer-reviewed research using a dynamic generalized autoregressive score model across Bitcoin, Ethereum, the Nasdaq, the S&P 500, and the Dow found that variance and correlation parameters were time-varying. This supports modeling the relationship dynamically instead of assuming one permanent coefficient.

Correlation also measures direction, not magnitude. Bitcoin may move much more than the index on a day when both returns share the same sign. A modest positive correlation can still create a large portfolio risk contribution when one asset is considerably more volatile.

The counter-case: “Bitcoin is leveraged Nasdaq” is incomplete

The phrase can describe Bitcoin's behavior in some macro regimes, but it is not an asset definition. Nasdaq-100 shareholders own claims on productive companies with revenues, costs, governance, and expected cash flows. Bitcoin holders own a scarce network asset without native earnings or dividends.

Crypto adoption, issuance expectations, exchange-traded-product flows, custody developments, regulation, exchange failures, and on-chain leverage can move Bitcoin independently. Earnings, antitrust decisions, semiconductor cycles, product launches, and index concentration can move the Nasdaq-100 independently. A week of decoupling is not proof of a new permanent regime, just as a month of close co-movement is not proof that the assets have become the same trade.

A defensible measurement method

  1. Use returns, not price levels. Price-level correlations can appear high merely because both series trend over time.
  2. Name the equity series. State NDX price return, Nasdaq-100 total return, or an ETF after fees.
  3. Match currencies and timestamps. Bitcoin trades 24/7 while US equities do not. Align BTC returns to the same US close-to-close interval and test weekly Friday-close observations separately.
  4. Show several windows. For example, report 30-, 90-, and 252-trading-day rolling Pearson correlations, plus rank correlation as a robustness check.
  5. Separate stress periods. Examine drawdown overlap, volatility shocks, and recovery time rather than relying on a full-sample average.
  6. Report uncertainty. Short samples are noisy. Publish the observation count, data source, cutoff, and treatment of weekends and missing values.
  7. Do not infer causation. Same-day movement may reflect a third factor such as rates, the dollar, or risk appetite.

What this means for portfolio decisions

Use rolling correlation as one input alongside volatility, maximum drawdown, liquidity, custody, and position size. Ask whether the proposed diversification survives a common macro shock and whether a Bitcoin loss would force selling elsewhere. Volatility-scaled exposure often tells a more useful story than equal dollar weights.
